Tablets for Kids Help With Autism

In recent years, the medical community has made great strides when it comes to better understanding autism and other cognitive learning differences. Technology and educational specialists have been working hand-in-hand to come up with interactive developmental tools geared specifically for children with Aspergers and Autism. As luck would have it, Apple, Inc. came up with the perfect solution without even trying – the iPad.

For a child with developmental challenges, communicating with others can be a tough hurdle to overcome. And while it may seem like a regular computer would be the perfect aide, according to X, a mouse and keyboard setup presents coordination obstacles that sometimes prove more frustrating than helpful. This motor coordination problem, however, is greatly reduced with a touch-screen tablet PC.

The feedback capabilities of tablet PCs are second-to-none – making them ideal for children who have a tough time expressing their needs, wants and emotions. Dr. Jenni Gous of the Kay School for Specialized Education explained that “the beauty of the iPad is that it is immediately accessible…it’s going to change the way we teach children and we are only beginning to see the tip of the iceberg of its potential.”

A student of the Kay School, Ruben Boucher, is nonverbal. An inquisitive child, Ruben is currently learning how to handle his autism. In the past, Ruben would only speak to a few special teachers and his parents. Once he was given an iPad, though, Ruben has made great strides.

Audrey Boucher, Ruben’s mommy, is amazed at how quickly her son has taken to his tablet PC. “Ruben struggles to speak, so now it’s easier for him to communicate through pictures. It actually helps us to understand him better. He loves it,” she enthused.

When thirteen-year-old Madison Mitchell gets home from school, her iPad goes into action. Amazingly, the tablet reminds Madison to put away her backpack. If Madison presses the icon for “snack,” a trusty iPad companion helps her through the process of fixing something to eat. Prologue2go, an icon-to-voice software program also helps Ms. Mitchell communicate more readily with her family and even strangers.

The progress autistic children are making with tablet PCs is unassailable. And with reasonably priced, children’s versions hitting the market, every parent with an autistic child should consider making the purchase – it could open up a whole new world for your child.
